Hidden in the Wilderness:

When God Pulls You Away to Prepare You

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” — Exodus 14:14

There are seasons in life when it feels as though everyone has forgotten you. The phone stops ringing. Friendships begin to fade. Opportunities seem to disappear. Doors close without explanation, and you wonder if you’ve done something wrong.

I know that feeling because I’ve lived it.

For a long time, I questioned why God seemed to be removing people from my life. I felt isolated. There were moments when loneliness became overwhelming, and I wondered why my life looked so different from everyone else’s. While others were building friendships, relationships, and careers, nothing was going right in my life. I often found myself alone with my thoughts.

What I didn’t understand then was that God wasn’t punishing me.

He was hiding me.

The wilderness isn’t always a place of punishment. Sometimes it is God’s classroom. It is where he removes distractions so he can refine our hearts before revealing our purpose.

God Separates Before He Elevates

Throughout Scripture, we see that God often prepares his people in hidden places before bringing them into public ministry.

  • Moses spent forty years in the wilderness before leading Israel.
  • David was anointed king but spent years hiding in caves before wearing the crown.
  • Elijah heard God’s whisper after withdrawing into the wilderness.
  • Even Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness before beginning his ministry.

The wilderness is where pride dies.

The wilderness is where dependence grows.

The wilderness is where God teaches us that his presence is enough.

Looking back now, I realize God was removing voices that were competing with his. He was teaching me to hear him above the noise of the world.

A Turning Point

One experience forever changed my life.

At the time, I was still struggling with smoking marijuana. Deep inside, I knew it wasn’t where God wanted me to remain. I wasn’t proud of it, and I wasn’t trying to justify it. I was simply a woman crying out for change.

Even while struggling, I never stopped praying. I remember saying, “Lord, please change me. I don’t want to stay this way.” One day, I sat quietly with worship music playing through my headphones. I made a decision in that moment. I said, “Lord, I’m going to meditate on you until you acknowledge me.” I wasn’t expecting anything dramatic. I simply wanted him. As I sat there focusing on him, something happened that I can only describe as one of the most profound spiritual experiences of my life.

The music in my headphones suddenly became disrupted. Then everything faded into what sounded like white noise. In what I experienced, I found myself sitting in beautiful green grass surrounded by angels. I couldn’t see their faces, only robes that were brilliantly white. Everything around me was filled with peace, unlike anything I had ever known. Then I noticed a towering building. It stretched so high that no matter how far I looked upward, I could not see the end of it.

There was no fear. Only peace. The kind of peace that makes you feel completely safe. I felt like a little child resting in perfect love. I remember not wanting to leave. I asked if I could stay. But in my heart, I sensed the lord telling me that I had to go back. When I returned to my normal awareness, I knew something inside me had changed.

I cannot explain every detail of what happened that day, nor do I claim to fully understand it. I simply know what I experienced and how deeply it impacted my walk with Christ. It reminded me that God’s mercy reaches for us even while we are still struggling, and his desire is always to transform us, not abandon us.

Grace Meets Us Before We Are Perfect

That encounter taught me something I will never forget. God didn’t wait until I was perfect to meet me. He met me while I was still praying for freedom. That doesn’t mean God approves of our sin. It means his grace is greater than our failures. He meets sincere hearts that are willing to surrender.

Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It happens through daily surrender. It happens by choosing Jesus again and again.

The Hidden Years Were Necessary

Today I understand why God allowed me to walk through seasons of isolation. He wasn’t taking people away because he wanted me to be lonely. He was removing distractions so I could become who he created me to be. He was teaching me to depend on his voice more than the opinions of others. He was healing wounds I didn’t even know I carried. He was refining my character before releasing my calling.

Now I can see that every lonely season, every closed door, every tear, and every unanswered question became part of God’s preparation.

The wilderness was never wasted.

If You’re in the Wilderness Right Now

Maybe you’re reading this while feeling forgotten. Maybe everyone else seems to be moving ahead while you’re standing still. Don’t mistake God’s silence for his absence. Seeds grow underground before they ever break through the surface. Hidden roots produce visible fruit. God often does his deepest work where no one else can see.

Trust the process.

Trust the pruning.

Trust the waiting.

One day, you’ll look back and realize that the wilderness wasn’t where your life stopped. It was where your purpose began.

Prayer

Father, thank you for every wilderness season that has drawn me closer to you. Help me to trust you even when I don’t understand what you’re doing. Refine my heart, remove everything that doesn’t reflect you, and prepare me for the purpose you have planned for my life. Teach me to desire your presence more than anything this world can offer. Thank you for meeting me with grace, even in my weakest moments, and for never giving up on me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
